Crafting: Spoon Carving Workshop
Saturday 20th September: Spoon Carving Workshop
10am – 3pm

Learnt the techniques of wood carving and carve your own wooden spoon at this hands-on workshop at the Roman Army Museum with Maurice Pyle, WOODSMITH. At the Vindolanda Trust, we have one of the largest collections of ancient wooden artefacts in Roman Britain, including hand carved spoons the soldiers of the frontier would be using as part of their daily life up here on the edge of Empire.
This workshop is designed for adults. No previous experience is necessary. If you have an interest in wood crafting or archaeology, this workshop will add to your knowledge and skills of the subject in this fun, interactive workshop!
Maurice Pyle finds joy in working with green, freshly harvested wood, using simple hand tools to create beautiful and functional items from natural materials. You can find out more about Maurice’s work at https://www.woodsmith.co.uk
You are welcome to bring your own packed lunch, or purchase lunch in our café. The Roman Army Museum will be open from 9:30am – 5:30pm so please do take the time to explore.
