Meet the Magna team!
Rachel: Senior Archaeologist
Originally from bonnie Scotland I studied Classics and Latin at school. I then crossed the border to study Archaeology at Durham which included many fieldtrips to Hadrian’s Wall and excavating at Binchester Roman fort. After graduating I started working in commercial archaeology which took me to sites all over the country. I’m excited to be back in the North again and looking forward to leading the excavations at Magna. When not in the trenches you might find me swimming, baking or reading.
Franki: Geoarchaeologist
I studied Classical Archaeology in the USA before moving to the UK to complete a Masters and I’ve never left. I am passionate about archaeology and the environment which together fits perfectly for my role as geoarchaeologist for the Magna project. I am excited to explore the way in which climate change has impacted on archaeological sites and how we might mitigate side effects. In my free time I enjoy rock climbing and cooking delicious vegetarian meals. I am not opposed to the occasional reality TV show and a pub quiz with friends.
Sophie: Activity & Diversity Officer
Having moved up here to the North-East to complete my MA in Heritage Studies in 2019 I totally fell in love with the region and have stayed here ever since. I have a real passion for making heritage accessible, researching and engaging with new narratives from excavated finds. And so, I am delighted to bring this to the team at the Vindolanda Trust. As a keen hiker I was able to walk the length of Hadrian’s Wall in September 2022, which was a fantastic experience. Alongside / outside of my role I enjoy visiting new museum exhibitions, going to music gigs and wild swimming.
