Ancient Woodcrafting
Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd February, 11am – 3pm
During this two-day event, Maurice Pyle: Woodland Craftsman, will be showcasing traditional techniques such as the pole lathe and spoon carving, techniques they would have used in Roman times. Don’t miss your chance to see these techniques in action:
11am– Pole Lathe Demonstration
1pm – Spoon Carving Demonstration
Both sessions offer a hands-on opportunity, so roll up your sleeves and try your hand at these ancient skills!
As part of our ongoing research between 2023 and 2027, we’re exploring the previously unexcavated Roman site of Magna. The changing climate has made it harder to preserve organic materials like wood, and this event is a celebration of those ancient woodcrafts and the valuable insights we can uncover from the wooden artifacts we find.
Before you go, be sure to take a look at our wooden artefacts on display at the Roman Army Museum, featuring items like a clog sole, wooden bowl, hand-carved spoon, and comb.
