Magna Guided Tours

Our guided tours are given by our amazing volunteer guides, they all start from outside the museum entrance. They take place on Wednesdays, Saturdays & Sundays and start at 11am & 1pm. 

The tours will take you through some of the history of the site and of Magna and how it came to be the site it is today. From the Romans to the Border Reivers, to it’s farmers to the Vindolanda Trust, the journey of this Roman fort is exciting and of course still ongoing. There is currently research taking place to understand the impact that climate change is having on the preservation of the archaeology below the surface to find out more about the Magna Project funded by NLHF you can visit the Magna Fort Tab above.

Please Note: 

• These tours are across rugged and sometimes boggy terrain without paths. If you would like to attend please wear suitable clothing and footwear for walking through fields (long trousers and boots recommended).
• Some fields may have livestock in them.
• There are very little visible remains of Magna fort but the history is fascinating. This tour is more about the landscape and modern history of the site.
• This is not a tour of the excavations or excavated remains.

This tour is recommended for older children and adults due to the terrain, any children must be supervised by an adult and behave responsibly around livestock.
