Pottery: Lamps and Deities
Saturday 8th November
10am – 3pm

Across the Roman Empire factories, mass produced moulded ceramic objects in vast numbers. Probably most notable among these are the pottery oil lamps and deity figurines found on almost every Roman archaeological site. Vindolanda and Magna are no exception.
Create your own Roman-inspired votive offerings and oil lamps at this hands-on workshop at the Roman Army Museum with Potted History. During the Ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia, small gifts such as oil lamps were exchanged between people. This workshop is ideal to make a unique, bespoke present to exchange over the festive period.
This workshop is designed for adults. No previous experience is necessary. If you have an interest in ceramics or archaeology, this workshop will add to your knowledge and skills of the subject.
Graham Taylor is a potter, experimental archaeologist, and ancient pottery technology specialist based in Rothbury, Northumberland. You can find out more about Graham’s work at www.pottedhistory.co.uk
You are welcome to bring your own packed lunch, or purchase lunch in our café. The Roman Army Museum will be open from 9:30am – 4pm so please do take the time to explore.
