Sensing Religion
Suitable for older children and adults.
Step into the ritual world of Roman Britain through our temporary poster exhibition, Sensing Religion. Using research from objects in the Vindolanda Trust’s collection, this exhibition explores how Romans experience religion and ritualistic practice through sight, smell, touch and sound.
Discover how everyday and ritual objects were used in religious practice, from their textures and materials, to the scents and sounds that accompanied acts of worship. We invite you to see, small, and touch elements inspired by this research, helping bring ancient beliefs to life in an immediate and human way.
The exhibition takes place the Activity Centre at the Roman Army Museum, with views across Magna Roman Fort and the landscape surrounding Hadrian’s Wall, connecting to the ancient landscape.
