Education
Our education offer has a focus on multi-sensory study and meaningful engagement with the past. A curriculum-based programme has been designed to meet your educational needs in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall country.
New! Work Experience 2025
9th – 13th June & 30th June – 4th July 2025, 10am – 3:30pm in-person at both the Roman Army Museum and Roman Vindolanda Fort and Museum. Please note, you must be able to get to either site during the week.

The Vindolanda Trust is offering an exciting work experience programme for students aged 16 – 17 that lets you dive into the world of heritage, culture, archaeology and the fascinating Roman history of Hadrian’s Wall. This work experience would especially suit students who are interested in Heritage, Culture and Museums. However, there are a variety of careers within the heritage sector, and so this programme could meet a broad range of interests and subjects, including STEM.
You’ll spend the week at the award-winning Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda Fort and Museum, getting up close with archaeological excavations at Roman Magna and Vindolanda Fort. You’ll even help with post-excavation processes and see how we preserve the amazing artefacts we find.
You’ll also go behind the scenes with key people from the Trust like our Deputy CEO, Communications Manager, and Museum Manager, who will give you an insight into all the different careers you could have in the heritage world. Plus, there’s a chance to do accessibility training and learn how the sector is making sure history is enjoyed by everyone.
By the end of the week, you’ll create your own blog or vlog, sharing everything you’ve learned and experienced. This is a great chance to build your communication skills, teamwork, and research abilities, while getting a taste of the heritage sector.
Please complete this Expression of Interest Form by midnight on Monday 7th April 2025. Spaces will be confirmed by 5pm on Thursday 10th April.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with sophiewestlake@vindolanda.com for more information.

Education Group Visits
For a comprehensive education visit we recommend visiting both the Roman Army Museum and Roman Vindolanda Fort & Museum.
We aim to offer fun and exciting as well as educational sites to visit. We have prepared three curriculum based themed packs for you and your students to get the most from your day.

Not only will students learn about the Romans, but they will be able to address and devise historically valid questions about change, cause, and significance. They will be able to ask historically valid questions by looking at different aspects of the site and museums. They will explore a range of sources to gain knowledge of how the past is constructed and identify ways in which it is presented by gathering information from a variety of primary and secondary sources. The students will also work in supportive groups and cooperate to complete a task. They can demonstrate an ability to take responsibility for their learning process and they will work to develop empathy by looking at history from different angles. Finally, they will gain confidence by exploring an archaeological site and museums.
